The Black Cats are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City. The talented winger from Ghana has recently been linked with a move to Sunderland, who are eager to strengthen their squad after securing promotion to the Premier League. Fatawu, a 21-year-old Ghanaian international, has established himself as a key player for Leicester, having registered seven goals and fifteen assists in fifty-eight appearances for the club. His impressive performances have made him one of Leicester’s most valuable assets, with reports indicating a valuation of approximately £30 million.
Sunderland has been very active in the current transfer window, having already invested a significant amount of £141.5 million in new signings. This figure falls just short of the British record for a newly promoted club, which was set by Nottingham Forest in 2022 with a spending of £142 million. Among Sunderland’s recent acquisitions are Nordi Mukiele, a defender from Paris Saint-Germain, who joined for £9.5 million, former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, Brighton winger Simon Adingra, and the club’s record signing Habib Diarra from Strasbourg, for whom they reportedly paid around £30 million.
Fatawu initially arrived at Leicester on loan from Sporting Lisbon and played a pivotal role in the team’s successful campaign, which saw them clinch the Championship title in 2024. Following Leicester’s decision to exercise their option to purchase him permanently, the winger unfortunately sustained a serious knee injury that sidelined him for a considerable portion of the 2024-25 season. Now back in the Championship, Leicester has been looking to offload some players to manage their finances and squad depth. Notable departures include goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, who moved to West Ham for approximately £20 million, Wilfred Ndidi, who joined Besiktas for £9 million, and Conor Coady, who transferred to Wrexham for £2 million.
Sunderland has initiated preliminary discussions to formally express their interest in Fatawu. However, as of now, no official offer has been submitted. The club is proceeding with caution due to the potential cost and the complexities involved in finalizing such a deal. Nevertheless, Fatawu’s undeniable talent and significant impact on the pitch make him an immensely attractive prospect for Sunderland as they aim to build a competitive squad for the upcoming Premier League season.
